Woonsocket Company's Bernon Mill off Front Street. Dan Daniels purchased land on the Smithfield side of the
Blackstone River in 1821 and 1827. Built a mill with Jonathan Russell which was operated as the Russell
Manufacturing Company. Area was called "Danville." In 1831 Sullivan Dorr and Crawford Allen gained control of the
property. In 1832 the Woonsocket Company was formed and a model village was laid out. Named "Bernon" in honor of
Gabriel Bernon, a French Huguenot contemporary of Roger Williams.
